The retainer plate replaces your factory AK retainer plate or retainer wire and adds the channel the trigger locking bar rides in. It is the part that ties the FRT assembly to the receiver, and it is one of the two parts in the kit that routinely needs material removed to clear a rivet or a tight receiver.
What the Retainer Plate Does
In a factory AK, the retainer plate holds the trigger, hammer, and disconnector pins in place. In the FRT kit, it does that job and also provides the machined channel that guides the trigger locking bar as it moves with the safety lever shank.
Alignment here is not optional. A retainer plate that sits high, low, or cocked in the receiver will bind the trigger locking bar and the system will not cycle correctly. Most retainer plate replacements are bought after a first-attempt fitting went too far.
When You Need One
- Over-filed during fitting — too much material removed while clearing a receiver rivet.
- Bent or sprung — the plate no longer sits flat and the locking bar channel is out of alignment.
- Lost during disassembly — a common one; these parts have a habit of leaving the bench.
- Second build — receivers vary, and a plate fitted to one AK often will not transfer cleanly to another.
Fitment
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Platform | AK-47, AK-74, AKM, and RPK pattern rifles |
| Receiver | Standard AKM stamped or milled |
| Bolt carrier | Full-stroke or short-stroke |
| Calibers | 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 5.56x45 |
| Does not fit | Pistol-caliber AKs (9mm, .45 ACP, and similar) |
Fitting Notes
Fitting varies by receiver. If the plate resists a straight pull during removal, try lifting diagonally — a rivet is usually the obstruction. Mark your material removal area before you touch a file, and confirm the locking bar cylinder sits fully within its channel before reassembling the rifle.
What You Get
One (1) AK-47 FRT retainer plate. Sold individually. Hump block, trigger locking bar, transfer bar, and recoil buffer are sold separately.
Before You Order
This is a component part for an AK forced reset trigger system, sold as a replacement or spare. Forced reset trigger regulations continue to develop and vary by state. Review our FRT legality resource for the current picture before ordering, and confirm what applies where you live.
