Kabuto FRT Installation Guide & Troubleshooting
Read this entire guide before installing your Kabuto. A proper setup makes the difference between a flawless experience and unnecessary frustration.
Before You Begin: What You Need
The Kabuto is a drop-in forced reset device that works with your existing trigger group. Unlike the Super Safety, it does not require any trigger modification and installs using a standard AR safety selector.
Required components not included:
- Full-auto spec BCG — This is non-negotiable. The Kabuto will not function with a semi-spec BCG. Any full-auto spec bolt carrier group will work.
- Buffer weight:
- AR-15: Minimum H2 buffer required. H3 recommended for most builds.
- AR-9: 10+ oz deadblow buffer required. You will also need to remove the BCG weight from the rear of the bolt carrier.
- Compatible trigger: Confirmed to work with mil-spec triggers, Geissele, and LaRue.
Important note on the selector: Once your new selector is installed, it functions as a normal safety even if the Kabuto device itself is removed. No disassembly required if you want to run standard semi-auto mode.
Break-In Period
The Kabuto has a break-in period. This is normal and expected.
If the device does not cycle cleanly in the third (FRT) position during dry fire, do not assume something is wrong. Shoot 1-2 magazines in the semi-auto position first. This allows the internal components to seat properly against your lower receiver and trigger group. After that break-in, switch to the FRT position and run it.
Skipping the break-in is the most common reason first-time users think their Kabuto isn't working.
Installation: Step by Step
Your kit includes: the Kabuto device and your selector (material and configuration depending on your order).
Step 1 — Remove Your Existing Selector
Remove the pistol grip and existing safety selector from your lower receiver.
Step 2 — Install the New Selector
Nylon selector: Install exactly like a standard safety selector and reinstall the pistol grip. That's it.
Metal selector: - Remove the screw from the right side of the selector - Push the lever rearward to pop it off - Insert the selector body into the safety position on the lower - Reinstall the detent plunger and pistol grip - Slide the lever back onto the right side of the lower - Thread the screw in fully
Step 3 — Identify Your Lower Cut
There are two common lower receiver cuts. Identifying yours determines whether you need the included spacer.
AR-15 cut — The standard mil-spec lower receiver cut. The Kabuto drops straight in with no spacer required.
M16 cut — Common on PSA lowers and many others. You will need the included spacer for this configuration.
To install the spacer (M16 cut lowers only): Peel the protective film from the adhesive backing and press the spacer firmly into the right side of the Kabuto device — right side being the orientation as it sits installed in the lower. Installation after that is identical to the AR-15 cut process.
Step 4 — Drop In the Kabuto
With your selector installed, drop the Kabuto device into the lower receiver. Press the lever forward against the hammer and close the upper onto the lower.
AR-9 Variation
Installation is identical to the AR-15 process with one difference: remove the BCG weight from the rear of your bolt carrier before installing. The Kabuto will not cycle correctly in an AR-9 with the weight installed.
Buffer requirement for AR-9: 10+ oz deadblow buffer.
Troubleshooting
Most common issue: bolt binding
This is almost always one of two things — the device needs oil, or it hasn't been broken in yet.
Fix: 1. Apply oil to the Kabuto device 2. Reinstall and live fire at least one magazine in semi-auto 3. This allows the components to mesh naturally with your lower and trigger group and clears any initial binding between metal parts 4. Switch to the FRT position and run it
If you're still experiencing issues after the break-in and oiling, the next things to check are: - BCG spec — confirm you are running a full-auto spec BCG, not semi - Buffer weight — confirm you are running at minimum an H2 (H3 preferred) for AR-15, or a 10+ oz deadblow for AR-9 - Selector installation — confirm the selector is fully seated and the screw is tightened completely

The Kabuto is a semi-automatic device. One round is fired per trigger pull. It does not convert your firearm to fire automatically and is not a machine gun under federal law. Following the May 2025 DOJ settlement, forced reset trigger devices are federally legal. Check your state laws before purchasing or installing — certain states maintain independent restrictions.
