Rare Breed FRT-15L3 Review — Specs, Performance & What to Know Before You Buy

The Rare Breed FRT-15L3 is the trigger that built the modern forced reset trigger market. It's been refined through three generations since 2020 and has earned a real following among AR-15 owners. Here's the complete breakdown — what it is, how it performs, what it costs, and what you need to make it run.

What Is the Rare Breed FRT-15L3?

The FRT-15L3 is the third-generation forced reset trigger from Rare Breed Triggers — the company widely credited with bringing forced reset technology to the mainstream civilian AR-15 market. The L3 designation marks meaningful refinements over the original FRT-15 and L2: tighter manufacturing tolerances, smoother reset geometry, and the addition of a 3-position ambidextrous safety selector.

Like all forced reset triggers, the FRT-15L3 uses the rearward travel of the bolt carrier group to mechanically push the trigger forward and complete the reset before the BCG returns to battery. The result is a dramatically faster reset than any standard semi-auto trigger group — limited only by BCG cycle time rather than the shooter's finger speed.

The FRT-15L3 comes in two shoe variants — curved and flat — with identical mechanical specs. It is drop-in compatible with standard mil-spec AR-15 lowers and requires no gunsmithing or receiver modification.

Performance — What the Data Shows

Semi-Auto Mode

In semi-auto mode the FRT-15L3 delivers a consistent single-stage pull at 4–4.5 lbs with a clean break. Community feedback across thousands of verified owners consistently rates the semi-auto feel as smooth and predictable — a genuine strength of the L3 design compared to earlier FRT generations.

FRT Mode

In FRT mode the trigger pull increases to 5.5–6 lbs — heavier than the semi-auto mode. The BCG-driven reset is fast and consistent when properly set up with the right buffer weight. Rare Breed's own documentation and community reports both confirm reliable cycling across a wide variety of 5.56 and .223 ammunition. The FRT mode performs as advertised: dramatically faster split times than any standard semi-auto trigger.

Buffer and BCG Requirements

Like all forced reset triggers, the FRT-15L3 is sensitive to buffer weight and BCG compatibility. Running the wrong hardware is the most common cause of FRT reliability issues across all brands — not the trigger itself.

Rare Breed's official recommendation: Full-auto compatible BCG required. H2 or H3 buffer recommended for carbine builds. Standard rifle buffer for 20" A2 builds.
Build Type Gas System Recommended Buffer
Standard carbine Carbine / Mid-length H2 or H3
SBR / Pistol build Pistol-length H3 minimum
Suppressed build Any H3 recommended
Rifle-length 20" A2 Rifle-length Standard rifle buffer

For a complete guide on buffer weights for FRT triggers including H2.5 options, see our FRT trigger buffer guide.

Installation Overview

The FRT-15L3 installs in any standard mil-spec AR-15 lower without gunsmithing. The process mirrors a standard trigger group swap with the addition of the proprietary selector installation:

  • Remove existing trigger group (hammer, trigger, disconnector, springs)
  • Drop in the FRT-15L3 trigger assembly using standard trigger pins
  • Install the included ambidextrous safety selector — note that standard AR-15 selectors are not compatible
  • Install anti-walk pins with blue Loctite at 15 in/lbs
  • Function check all three selector positions before loading

Rare Breed recommends running the trigger dry after initial factory lubrication. Excess oil attracts carbon buildup and can affect reliability.

M16-cut lower owners: The extra clearance in an M16 sear pocket lower can cause fitment issues. Verify compatibility before installation. Certain Colt lowers with a sear block or shelf are known incompatible.

Where Is the FRT-15L3 Legal?

Rare Breed does not ship to the following states: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington, and Washington D.C. State laws in this area continue to evolve — always verify your state's current statutes before purchasing any FRT trigger.

Who Should Buy the FRT-15L3

  • Shooters who specifically want the original FRT brand — Rare Breed built this market and the L3 is their most refined product
  • Left-handed shooters — the ambidextrous selector is a genuine advantage for southpaw AR-15 owners
  • Shooters who prioritize semi-auto trigger feel alongside FRT capability — the L3's semi-auto mode is consistently rated smooth by verified owners
  • High round-count users who want the most extensively documented durability record — 10,000 rounds of documented testing is the highest published test count in the FRT category

Rare Breed FRT-15L3 — Common Questions

Is the Rare Breed FRT-15L3 legal?
Federally yes, following the May 2025 DOJ settlement confirming FRT triggers are not machine guns under the NFA. Rare Breed does not ship to CA, CT, DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NY, OR, RI, WA, or DC. See our full state-by-state legal guide.
What buffer do I need for the Rare Breed FRT-15L3?
Rare Breed officially recommends an H2 or H3 buffer for carbine builds under 16". Standard carbine buffers will cause cycling issues. See our complete FRT buffer guide for build-specific recommendations.
Does the FRT-15L3 require a full-auto BCG?
Yes. Rare Breed explicitly requires a full-auto compatible bolt carrier group for proper FRT-15L3 function. Standard AR-15 BCGs with a shorter carrier tail will cause reset issues.
Why can I only buy 2 FRT-15L3 triggers per transaction?
Rare Breed limits purchases to two per transaction to manage inventory. This is a seller policy, not a legal requirement.
What is the difference between the curved and flat FRT-15L3?
Purely cosmetic shoe shape preference. The curved and flat variants share identical mechanical specs, performance, and price. Choose based on your preferred trigger feel ergonomics.
Is there a comparable FRT trigger at a lower price?
Yes — the Partisan Disruptor at $299 delivers comparable FRT mode performance with a lighter trigger pull at $150 less than the FRT-15L3. We carry it as an authorized dealer and bundle it with the correct BCG and buffer. See the full comparison here.
