How To Install A Super Safety On An AR-15 — Complete Step-by-Step Guide

The full Hoffman Tactical Super Safety installation walkthrough with photos, dry-fire function tests, the buffer fix you need, and every troubleshooting tip we've learned from thousands of customer installs.

What Is A Super Safety?

The Hoffman Tactical Super Safety is a three-position drop-in selector that converts your AR-15's fire control group into a forced-reset firing platform. It replaces your standard safety selector with a cam and lever assembly that engages the hammer during the bolt carrier's rearward travel, mechanically resetting the trigger between shots.

The three positions are SAFE, SUPER SAFE (forced-reset mode), and SEMI — giving you the option to run your rifle as a standard semi-auto or in forced-reset mode without swapping parts.

Installation is straightforward, but the details matter. Get the cam orientation wrong, use a pointed safety detent, or skip the trigger cut, and the Super Safety won't function correctly. This guide walks through every step with reference photos so you can verify your work as you go.

⚠ Before You Begin

All Super Safety products are recommended to be installed by a qualified gunsmith. Always verify your firearm is unloaded and the chamber is clear before disassembly.

You MUST use a trigger cut to Hoffman Tactical's specs. You MUST use a rounded safety detent. Skipping either of these will cause the Super Safety to malfunction.

The Three Super Safety Selector Positions

Know exactly what each selector position looks like before you install.

Position 1 — SAFE

Standard safe position. The lever sits clear of the hammer and the trigger is mechanically blocked. The Super Safety in SAFE functions identically to a factory AR-15 safety selector.

Selector rotated fully counter-clockwise from the shooter's perspective.

Position 2 — SUPER SAFE

The forced-reset middle position. The Super Safety lever engages the hammer, requiring the bolt carrier's rearward travel to reset the trigger between shots. This is what makes the Super Safety different from any other AR-15 selector.

Selector at 90° — the middle of the three positions.

Position 3 — SEMI

Standard semi-automatic fire. The Super Safety lever rotates clear of the hammer, allowing the trigger to function as a normal AR-15 semi-auto trigger.

Selector rotated fully clockwise from the shooter's perspective.

Parts & Tools Required For Super Safety Install

Gather everything before you start. Missing the rounded detent or cut trigger will stop your install cold.

Required Parts
  • Hoffman Tactical Super Safety (cam + lever)
  • Trigger cut to Hoffman Tactical spec
  • Rounded safety detent
  • Safety detent spring (standard)
  • Mil-spec FA M16 BCG
  • Low-shelf AR-15 lower receiver
  • H2 buffer (strongly recommended)
Tools
  • Punch set (roll pin / pivot pin)
  • Flat-tip screwdriver / grip driver
  • Bench block
  • Brass or nylon hammer
  • Dremel (only if modifications needed)
  • 3D-printed GO/NO-GO trigger jigs (optional)

Super Safety Installation — Step-by-Step

Work in order. Each step assumes the previous one is complete and correct.

1

Clear The Firearm & Strip The Lower Receiver

Verify the firearm is unloaded — magazine out, chamber clear. Separate the upper from the lower. Remove the existing safety selector, fire control group (trigger, hammer, disconnector), pistol grip, and safety detent + spring.

Set aside the OEM safety selector — the Super Safety cam and lever assembly will take its place. Save the detent spring; you'll re-use it.

2

Install Your Cut Trigger & Hammer

Install your Hoffman Tactical–spec cut trigger group into the lower using the standard trigger and hammer pins. The Super Safety requires a cut trigger to function — a standard mil-spec trigger will not work.

Pro tip: Heavy trigger pull after assembly usually means the trigger is slightly out of spec. Lightly sand or polish the rounded corner and re-test. Don't remove too much material. 3D-printed GO/NO-GO trigger jigs help verify fitment fast.

3

Verify Safety Detent Track Alignment

Before pushing the safety cam into the lower, look at the detent track milled into the cam. It must line up with the safety detent hole in your lower receiver. If the cam is flipped, the detent won't engage and the Super Safety selector won't index between positions.

4

Insert The Safety Cam From The Left, Partway

Slide the Super Safety cam into the lower from the left side (shooter's perspective), but stop partway through. You need enough room inside the safety bore to drop the lever in next — don't push the cam all the way through yet.

5

Drop The Lever Into The Cam's Open Slot

Place the lever into the open slot in the safety cam. Critical orientation: the tip of the lever must point toward the rear of the receiver — away from the hammer.

Installing the Super Safety lever backwards is the #1 most common mistake. If the lever points forward toward the hammer, the system will not function and you risk damaging parts on first cycle.

6

Push The Cam Fully Through The Lower

With the lever seated in its slot, push the Super Safety cam the rest of the way through the lower until it's fully seated. The lever should now be captured inside the receiver, free to engage the hammer when the cam is rotated into the SUPER SAFE position.

7

Install The Rounded Safety Detent, Spring & Pistol Grip

Drop the rounded safety detent (point down) into the detent hole, followed by the detent spring. A standard pointed detent will bind in the cam's detent track — you must use a rounded detent specifically made for Super Safety installs.

Thread your pistol grip into place, capturing the detent spring. Rotate the safety through all three positions — it should index cleanly with a positive click at SAFE, SUPER SAFE, and SEMI.

Super Safety Dry-Fire Function Testing

Always verify the upper is separated and the rifle is unloaded before any dry-fire testing.

Test 1 — Verify SAFE

Cock the hammer. Place selector on SAFE. The trigger should be blocked — pulling it should produce no movement and no hammer drop. This confirms standard safety function.

Test 2 — Verify SEMI

Cock the hammer. Place selector on SEMI. Pull the trigger — the hammer should drop normally, exactly like any standard AR-15 semi-auto trigger.

Test 3 — Verify SUPER SAFE (Forced-Reset Cycle)

This is the critical test for Super Safety function. Place the selector in the middle (SUPER SAFE) position and apply constant rearward pressure on the trigger for the entire sequence:

  1. Cock the hammer. The lever should come to rest against the hammer.
  2. Pull the trigger — the hammer should drop normally.
  3. Re-cock the hammer.
  4. Pull the lever to the rear (simulating BCG travel).
  5. As you let the lever move forward back against the hammer, the hammer should drop again.

If any of these dry-fire tests fail: you have a trigger spec issue, a receiver tolerance issue, or a parts compatibility issue. Do not proceed to live fire until dry-fire passes cleanly in all three positions.

Super Safety Platform Compatibility

✓ Compatible

Standard AR-15 platforms using a typical full-auto M16 BCG and low-shelf or no-shelf lower receiver.

✗ Not Compatible

AR-10 / LR-308, AR 12GA, and any platform not using a typical FA M16 BCG. These cannot run the Super Safety even with modification.

⚠ Requires Additional Parts

AR22, MP5, MCX/MPX, JAKL, and similar platforms typically need platform-specific parts for Super Safety compatibility.

Super Safety Troubleshooting & Modifications

Not required on all platforms — only apply these if you experience the specific symptom described.

Problem: BCG Binds Or Locks Up When Pulled Rearward

This indicates a clearance issue between the Super Safety lever, BCG, and/or upper. First check whether your lower is a high-shelf lower — our FAQ maintains a list, but always verify your own parts.

If it's a low-shelf lower, you have two options:

  • Preferred: Cut the rear of the upper opening back to gain clearance.
  • Alternative: Grind the top of the lever until it clears. This may affect lever integrity, so we don't recommend it and we will not replace the lever if it fails after this modification.

Problem: Light Primer Strikes Or Hammer Follow

Typically presents as 1–2 rounds firing, then the trigger goes dead. This is a buffer weight issue 99% of the time. The fixes:

  • Replace the buffer with an H2 or H3 buffer (start with H2).
  • If equipped with an adjustable gas block, dial it back as needed.

Problem: Super Safety In A PCC (Pistol Caliber Carbine)

In PCCs, the bolt weight may need to be cut to clear the lever, or replaced with a KAK Industry tungsten weight (preferred).

We strongly recommend CMMG upper systems for PCC Super Safety use — the radial-delay BCG prevents out-of-battery (OOB) issues. If you're not running CMMG, ensure your total bolt + buffer weight is 23+ oz to avoid OOB.

Problem: High-Shelf Lower Receivers

Some manufacturers (Colt and others — see our FAQ) use a high-shelf design or block that interferes with the Super Safety. We recommend avoiding these lowers for Super Safety builds, but you can cut the shelf out of the way with a Dremel if needed. Fitment is not guaranteed on modified high-shelf lowers.

Final Super Safety Pre-Range Checklist

  • Trigger is cut to Hoffman Tactical spec
  • Rounded safety detent installed (not pointed)
  • Lever tip points toward rear of receiver
  • Selector indexes cleanly through all three positions
  • All three dry-fire tests pass (SAFE / SEMI / SUPER SAFE cycle)
  • BCG cycles fully without binding
  • H2 buffer (or Odin Works HFRT system) installed

Super Safety Installation FAQ

How long does it take to install a Super Safety?

A first-time Super Safety install typically takes 15–30 minutes if you already have a cut trigger and rounded detent on hand. Experienced builders can complete the install in under 10 minutes.

Do I need a special trigger for the Super Safety?

Yes. The Super Safety requires a trigger cut to Hoffman Tactical's specs. A standard mil-spec trigger will not work. You can cut your own trigger using GO/NO-GO jigs or buy a pre-cut Super Safety trigger.

Why does the Super Safety need a rounded safety detent?

The Super Safety cam has a milled detent track that the safety detent rides in. A standard pointed detent will bind in this track and prevent the selector from indexing cleanly. A rounded detent rides smoothly in the track for proper three-position function.

What buffer do I need for a Super Safety?

An H2 buffer is the strongly recommended starting point. H3 may be needed in some setups. If you're running an adjustable gas block, you can fine-tune from there. The Odin Works HFRT is a purpose-built all-in-one buffer + tube system that eliminates the need for buffer swapping.

Is the Super Safety legal?

Yes. The Super Safety is federally legal following the May 2025 DOJ settlement restoring FRT legality. Some states have independent restrictions — verify your state and local laws before purchase.

Will the Super Safety work in an AR-10 or LR-308?

No. The Super Safety is designed for AR-15 platforms running a standard full-auto M16 BCG. It is not compatible with AR-10, LR-308, AR 12GA, or any platform not using a typical FA M16 BCG.

What's the difference between a Super Safety and an FRT?

A Super Safety replaces your safety selector with a three-position selector that enables forced-reset firing in the middle position. An FRT (like the Disruptor FRT from The Triggered Company) is a complete drop-in trigger group that delivers forced-reset functionality without requiring a cut trigger or selector swap. Both achieve similar performance through different mechanical paths.
