If you are building or upgrading and not sure what actually moves the needle, here is the honest order of operations:
- Trigger first. Biggest felt improvement per dollar on any AR-15. It is the only part your finger interacts with on every shot, and it directly determines your split times.
- Bolt carrier group second. A quality BCG with a properly staked gas key and a tested bolt is the difference between a rifle that runs and one that gives you excuses. This matters even more with an FRT, where reset depends on consistent, repeatable carrier travel.
- Buffer system third. Once the trigger and carrier are sorted, tuning buffer weight smooths the impulse and dials in reliability — particularly on short-barreled or suppressed builds.
- Everything else after. Furniture, rails and optics matter for ergonomics and aiming, but they do not change how the rifle cycles.
Common Questions
What are the best first upgrades for an AR-15?
The trigger and the bolt carrier group deliver the biggest performance change per dollar. The trigger is the only part you touch every shot; the BCG controls how reliably the rifle cycles. Furniture and optics matter, but they do not change how the rifle runs.
Does a full auto profile BCG make my rifle full auto?
No. A full auto profile carrier simply has more material at the rear of the carrier body. It is legal in a semi-automatic rifle, it is the standard mil-spec profile, and the added mass often smooths cycling. It does not and cannot convert a firearm to automatic fire.
What do MPI and HPT actually mean?
High Pressure Tested means each bolt is fired with an overpressure proof round beyond normal chamber pressure. Magnetic Particle Inspected means that bolt is then checked for microscopic cracks invisible to the eye. A bolt passing both has been proven, not assumed — and skipping these is where cheap BCGs cut cost.
Are forced reset triggers legal?
FRT legality is state specific and continues to evolve. An FRT fires one round per trigger pull and requires deliberate trigger input. Because the landscape changes, we keep a current state-by-state resource rather than making blanket claims — read it before ordering.
